Heather has drawn on all three of these traits to create Willow Wellness Studio. As an example of someone who is living a dream, she hopes to inspire others to pursue their dreams as well.

Heather first studied Pilates in Colorado when her ballet teacher promised that it would make her a better dancer. She went on to receive a B.A. in Dance Studies from Grinnell College. She has studied various Pilates methods since 1992 and completed her certification in STOTT Pilates in 2006 at Equilibrium in Bloomfield Hills, MI. She discovered the Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis methodologies in 2004 and has been continuing to fall in love with them ever since. After completing her certification in both methods, she has gone on to study prenatal and postpartum applications of Gyrotonic and Pilates as well as therapeutic applications of the movements. She specializes in injury rehabilitation including shoulder, neck, low back, hip, scoliosis and SI pain as well as cancer and stroke recovery. She continually strives to deepen her knowledge of the human body, traveling around the country to advance her studies. Her own experiences with past pain and injuries gives her a deeper understanding and compassion for others who are currently struggling with pain or injuries. Through her teaching she seeks to help people of all ability levels lead happier, healthier lives.

In addition to her movement studies, Heather completed the massage program at the Ann Arbor Institute of Massage Therapy in 2010 where she received certifications in Swedish Massage, Myofascial Release Technique and Neuromuscular Therapy. She offers both pure massage sessions as well as combination movement and massage sessions. She finds that her massage skills greatly complement her work with therapeutic movement.

When she isn’t teaching, Heather loves to spend time with her two dogs and her husband. She also periodically participates in various dance projects in the Ann Arbor area.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Essential Pilates

This is a classic Pilates class. Level may vary from beginning to intermediate and pace is moderate. Some small equipment may be used.

Morning Pilates

A great way to start your day -- this class will take you through a gentle warm-up and build towards more challenging exercises throughout the class. You will leave feeling taller, more awake, and ready for the day! Level is beginner through intermediate and pace is moderate.

Small Equipment Pilates

We get out all the toys for this class – stability balls, barrels, rollers, bands, toning balls, and more. The use of small equipment can modify traditional mat exercises to make them more challenging or easier depending on the exercise and the equipment. This class offers variety and a change of pace from the traditional mat class. Level varies from beginning to intermediate and pace is moderate.

Intermediate Pilates

Some Pilates experience is required for these classes. Pace is faster and exercises are more advanced. These classes are for clients who want to push themselves further!

Gyrokinesis

Based on the same principles as Gyrotonic movements, Gyrokinesis classes are conducted sitting on stools, standing, and on the mat. Movements are three-dimensional with an emphasis on mobilizing the spine. Leave feeling centered, stretched out, and energized!

Prenatal Pilates

This class is designed especially for pregnant women. Stay in shape, release tension, and help to prepare your body for the birthing process.

Allison demonstrates an exercise on the Gyrotonic Pulley Tower.

A few benefits of Gyrotonic exercises:

  • Greater ease of movement;
  • Stronger muscles which are also more flexible;
  • An increased sense of connection through the body and body awareness;
  • More mobility of the spine;
  • Improved balance.

GYROTONIC METHODOLOGY

The Gyrotonic method is comprised of fluid, three-dimensional movements. At Willow Wellness Studio we offer Gyrotonic private lessons and duets.

Juliu Horvath created Gyrotonic equipment and exercises after many years of intense study and self-exploration. This unique system offers the same benefits also derived from yoga, dance, gymnastics, swimming and tai chi, but is not derived from these exercise modalities.

Gyrotonic methodology allows users to stretch and strengthen muscles, while simultaneously stimulating and strengthening connective tissues in and around the joints of the body. These exercises are synchronized with corresponding breathing patterns, thus enhancing aerobic and cardiovascular stimulation and promoting neuro-muscular rejuvenation.

Gyrotonic exercises offer complete freedom of movement. Exercises are performed on the Gyrotonic Pulley Tower, and the system is fully adjustable to meet the needs of many people with varying body types and levels of strength. The even and constant resistance in the handle unit and pulley tower completely eliminates the jarring that takes place at the beginning and end of exercises performed on conventional exercise equipment, when many injuries occur. The circular, spiraling and undulating movements that characterize the Gyrotonic methodology help to increase the functional capacity of the spine, contributing to a spherical and three-dimensional awareness, resulting in improved balance.

A Gyrokinesis exercise.

A few benefits of Gyrokinesis exercises:

  • Increased coordination of movement;
  • Exercises can be practiced anywhere -- good for traveling or home practice;
  • All of the other benefits of Gyrotonic exercises.

GYROKINESIS METHODOLOGY

The Gyrokinesis method is based on the same principles as Gyrotonic movement, but it is performed sitting on stools, on the mat, and standing. Since no large equipment is needed, Gyrokinesis exercises are often practiced in group classes. This is also an excellent system to practice at home or while traveling since the space and equipment requirements are limited.

More information about the Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis methodologies is available at www.gyrotonic.com.

We offer Pilates duets.

A few benefits of Pilates include:

  • Longer, leaner muscles (less bulk, more freedom of movement);
  • Improved posture;
  • Increased core strength, stability and peripheral mobility;
  • Heightened body awareness;
  • No-impact, easy on the joints.

PILATES

Pilates is a physical fitness system developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. Pilates called his method Contrology, because he believed his method uses the mind to control the muscles. The program focuses on the core postural muscles which help keep the body balanced and which are essential to providing support for the spine. In particular, Pilates exercises teach awareness of breath and alignment of the spine, and aim to strengthen the deep torso muscles.

Instructors at Willow Studio are trained in the STOTT method of Pilates. STOTT PILATES is a contemporary approach to the original exercise method pioneered by the late Joseph Pilates. Co-founders Moira and Lindsay G. Merrithew, along with a team of physical therapists, sports medicine and fitness professionals, have spent more than a decade refining the STOTT PILATES method of exercise. This resulted in the inclusion of modern principles of exercise science and spinal rehabilitation, making it one of the safest and most effective methods available. This clear and detailed approach forms the basis for STOTT PILATES training and certification programs.

Learn how to move with greater ease!

Use therapeutic movement to:

  • Address neck and shoulder issues;
  • Regain strength and flexibility after an injury, surgery, or stroke;
  • Increase hip flexibility and strength;
  • Work in a safe way to help maintain bone density;
  • Address various spine issues including scoliosis, surgery recovery, and pain management.

THERAPEUTIC MOVEMENT

The Pilates and Gyrotonic exercises can be modified to suit everyone from rehab patients to elite athletes and we love working with people on all parts of the spectrum. Instructors at Willow Wellness Studio have special training to use these movement systems therapeutically for rehabilitating injuries. We will be happy to consult with you to determine whether our modalities are safe and appropriate for your situation.

PRENATAL & POSTPARTUM

These exercise systems are also safe and appropriate (with your doctor’s approval, of course) for pregnancy as well as postpartum rehabilitation. Our instructors have taken special training and are certified to design prenatal and postpartum workouts.

Our instructors are trained to help guide you through the moves.

What is the difference between Pilates and the Gyrotonic method?

Pilates focuses on alignment control while Gyrotonic exercises work on releasing tension around the joints, re-patterning basic movements to be more efficient, and using a more full range of motion. Pilates is more two dimensional and linear while Gyrotonic exercises are more three dimensional, using circling and spiraling movements. In Pilates we work from the ‘core’ meaning, primarily, use of the abdominal muscles. In Gyrotonic movements we use the muscles of the pelvis, the abdominals, and the intrinsic muscles of the spine as our ‘core’. Pilates tends to work different parts of the body more individually while Gyrotonic philosophy approaches the body as a more integrated whole. Activities involving broad movements and rotation over a larger range would especially benefit from Gyrotonic exercises. Here is a real life example: Pilates would strengthen the PURE rotation of the golf swing and Gyrotonic exercises would focus on the larger range of motion necessary for a successful and powerful golf swing.

Pilates probably looks a little bit more like movement that you have encountered elsewhere -- at the gym or in physical therapy. Gyrotonic movements look more like dance and may seem more intimidating at first. If you are primarily interested in toning or strengthening specific muscles then you may want to try Pilates first. If you are interested in increasing your overall balance, coordination, or range of movement then try Gyrotonic methodology. We generally find that people gravitate more towards one system. We want you to enjoy your workout and are happy to let you give both systems a try.

What should I expect at my first lesson?

Come prepared with comfortable clothing which allows for freedom of movement. We don’t require form-fitting clothes, but you may find that really baggy clothes will get in your way. At your first lesson your instructor will take time to learn about your body and workout goals. You will be asked to fill out our waiver form and questionnai which you are also welcome to download and fill out in advance. You will then begin to learn the principles of the movement. Many people find that they have ‘a lot of things to think about’ at first, but don’t be overwhelmed! After a few lessons, the movement will become more familiar and for many people it may take on an almost meditative quality with more practice.

How often should I come for lessons?

The answer to this question varies depending on your goals, schedule, and finances. We will work with you at your initial session to create a plan that works for all of these considerations.
