MASSAGE

Massage hardly needs an introduction these days. You probably already know that massage can feel good and help you relax. Did you also realize that massage has a number of other therapeutic benefits? A few of these benefits include injury prevention and correction, reduction of scar tissue, pain relief and reduction of depression and anxiety.

Our massage therapists have received the highest levels of training in order to address a wide range of needs. Various specific techniques are used to help keep you in top form and on the move. A few of the techniques that may be used in your session include:

  • Swedish massage -- A style of massage that uses long continuous strokes as well as kneading techniques. This is one of the most popular styles of massage in the US. A few of its numerous benefits include decreased stress and improved circulation. Generally this is a lighter style of massage although you can request the type of pressure that you like.
  • Myofascial Release Technique -- An effective form of deep tissue massage which addresses postural distortions and chronic patterns of strain. Fascia is a connective tissue that runs throughout the body. When fascia is tightened along with underlying muscles, it can pull the body into a postural distortion. Myofascial therapy will help alleviate these distortions by loosening the fascia. Benefits include improved posture, greater ease of motion and relief from the pain caused by chronic strain patterns.
  • Neuromuscular therapy -- An advanced form of massage therapy which requires a high degree of anatomical precision and specificity to provide relief for chronically tense, contracted, and painful tissues. This work can be a bit uncomfortable from time to time but it’s those tender areas that usually need the most attention. Neuromuscular Therapy combined with Myofascial Release Technique is considered true medical massage.
  • Sports massage -- Sports massage is performed on any active person, however it is especially beneficial to athletes both pre- and post-event as well as during the maintenance phase of training. Techniques used can help prevent sports injuries, boost athletic endurance and performance, and accelerate recovery from injury or fatigue.
  • Our therapists will work with you to develop a massage plan for meeting your wellness goals. To make an appointment, contact us by email or call 734-274-9482 today!

MASSAGE THERAPIST PROFILES

Heather Glidden

Heather
  • Certified in Swedish massage
  • Certified in Myofascial Release Technique
  • Certified in Neuromuscular Therapy
  • Graduate of the Ann Arbor Institute for Massage Therapy
  • Movement & Massage Combined Sessions

After several years of working with therapeutic movement Heather felt that something was missing. Her search for the missing piece in her practice lead her to explore various manual modalities and eventually to massage school. While studying at massage school she understood more explicitly what she had understood intuitively before embarking on her studies: when the muscular and fascial systems are holding tension, they cannot perform to their fullest extent. More plainly put, releasing tension patterns in muscles and connective tissues can greatly increase their ability to move freely, to stretch, and to strengthen. This understanding, and the skills that she learned through her massage training, have allowed her to work even more effectively with her therapeutic movement clients.

Although she is available for a limited number of "pure" massages, she most enjoys combining movement and massage together into a single session. She also enjoys partnering with other manual therapists in order to help increase the benefits of both the manual therapy and the movement therapy being applied.
